What is organic cotton and how is it obtained?
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton represents the highest ecological and social standards in the textile industry. The GOTS mark ensures that the fabric is produced following strict environmental and social criteria throughout the entire production chain—from the sowing of cotton seeds to the final product. Organic cotton can be called and certified as cotton that is grown only through organic farming. The soil used for organic cotton production must be free of toxic chemicals for at least three years. Artificial pest control agents, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers must not be used. Genetically modified cotton plants are also not allowed. Instead of chemicals, plants are protected from pests by birds, wasps, and ladybugs. Plants are fertilized with natural fertilizers, and suitable cover crops are planted as needed. Water saving is critical in organic cotton cultivation. Organic methods require less water than conventional ones because the soil retains moisture better due to its higher organic matter content. This means that even during dry times, organic fields remain green, reducing the need for artificial irrigation. GOTS organic cotton production helps fight climate change by binding carbon in the soil through its rich organic matter content. This process reduces the emission of greenhouse gases, offering a sustainable solution to the textile industry.
Advantages of organic cotton:
Less pollution - the natural ecosystem on an organic cotton field takes care of the growth of the cotton, and there's no worry about pesticides and other chemicals contaminating nature.
Ecological - traditional agriculture, which uses chemicals and pesticides, depletes the soil of nutrients within a few years, while organic farming helps maintain the vitality of the land year after year.
Greater biological diversity – organic farming contributes to the diversity of the natural environment, which is very important for the Earth in the long term.
Genetically modified plants are not used - an open supply chain is part of organic farming. The cotton used in products can be traced back from the final product to the original growing field. This ensures that the products do not contain cotton grown from genetically modified seeds.
How is organic cotton different from regular cotton?
To save costs, regular cotton fabric is produced by mixing fibers of different qualities and production methods. Organic cotton cannot be mixed because its origin needs to be traceable from the final product to the field. Organic cotton fabric is of high quality and withstands heavy use and washing. Organic cotton is a natural choice for health-conscious consumers. Free from harmful chemicals, it offers softness and comfort even to the most sensitive skin, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
Is organic cotton more expensive?
Yes. The availability of 100% organic cotton is limited. The processes required for its production and verification are more complex, making the price slightly higher. Considering all the benefits of buying organic cotton, the price difference is not significant compared to what the environment gains from it. Every purchase of GOTS certified organic cotton is a step towards a more sustainable and fairer world. As consumers, we have the power to change the world by preferring products that are made with care for our planet and its inhabitants. Choosing GOTS certified organic cotton is not just an investment in quality and comfort but also a contribution to a cleaner, greener, and fairer world.
